Hiking Weverton Cliffs in Knoxville Maryland: Incredible Overlook Views!

By Beth Foster

Weverton Cliffs Overlook View

I love learning about new trails and hiking adventures! I’ve been wanting to hike Weverton Cliffs for about a year now and I am so happy that I was afforded that opportunity recently. Weverton Cliffs is a beautiful overlook that intersects the famous Appalachian Trail. The entire hike was fun from the beginning to the very end! I did the hike with my dog Charlie and a friend and we had a blast.

First things first. The distance of the hike is about 1.9 miles with an elevation of 567 feet.

It is on the border of Frederick County and Washington County Maryland. Also, if you would like you can hike from Harpers Ferry to Weverton Cliffs for a roundtrip of around 12 miles. I consider it a moderate hike due to the fact of the trail basically consisting of switchbacks. I highly recommend wearing some hiking/boots shoes because you will need as much tread as possible. The trail is also very rocky and after a rain or snow it will also be muddy.

Moreover, the trail is dog as well as child friendly and open year round. Additionally, it is FREE! We saw a good amount of people along the trail especially on the overlook. Being that we went on a weekday it wasn’t massive people but just enough. Be sure to bring plenty of water and some snacks while enjoying the view from the top. I will have to say, it is much easier going down than up!

The parking lot is also small, so be prepared to park along the side of road. When attempting to enter the trail from the parking lot don’t go towards the forest but head in the direction of road. At the end of the road you will see several stone steps with white markings. I hope you all will enjoy it as much as I did.
