Beaufort North Carolina: Wild Spanish Horses, Crystal Coast, Beautiful Waterfront & The Shark Shack

By, Beth Foster

Beaufort, North Carolina is the third oldest town after Bath and New Bern. Beaufort lies on the coast, bordering the southern tip of the Outer Banks. The town was originally a fishing village as well as port of safety going back to the late 1600s. It is also known as the Crystal Coast because the water is so clear, and its white sand beaches.

When I was getting close to the marina, I rode over a bridge, and it had the most beautiful view of Beaufort! I could see the small islands and the beautiful clear water. Shortly, I had arrived at my first destination “Beaufort Paddle”. The staff was so friendly and hospitable! I rented a kayak to kayak to the Rachael Carson Reserve. The rental came with a kayak, a paddle, and waterbag. All for a great price too. If you want to rent a kayak from this company, visit this website http://www.beaufortpaddle.com

After kayaking out of the marina, I was on my way to Rachael Carson Reserve. It took me about 15-20 minutes to get there! I did a little bit of some trails and took some pictures, then I was off to see the wild Spanish horses! I kayaked as close as I possibly could to see the horses. I actually ended up getting out of the kayak and taking some pictures of the horses, but I made sure that I was far enough away. It was about three to four wild horses! I have been waiting to see these wild horses since I was a little girl, and I finally was seeing them! It was so surreal!

I kayaked back to “Beaufort Paddle” and immediately drove to find a park downtown, so that I could stroll the waterfront! I got some ice cream on a waffle cone at “Beaufort General Store” and it melted so fast because it was so hot outside. However, it was still worth it because it was so delicious!

Then, I drove to Atlantic Beach, which is about 15 minutes from the town of Beaufort, to eat at this outdoor seafood restaurant called “The Shark Shack”! I ordered the fish fillet basket with a non-acholic Arnold Palmer. Both were so tasty. Not only is the food good here but the customer service and atmosphere are amazing as well! You have to eat here when you come to Beaufort or Atlantic Beach, the website is http://www.sharkshacknc.com. They also have a six-dollar menu, for first responders, firefighters, police and active-duty military.

On my next visit, I am thinking I may visit the historic sites.
