Belle Isle, Richmond, Virginia: Great Urban Outdoor Activities & Rich History

By, Beth Foster

Pedestrian footbridge in Belle Isle, Downtown Richmond, Virginia

I’ve been wanting to do some in-town hiking for some time now and I was so excited when I found out about Belle Isle in downtown Richmond, Virginia. I still can’t believe there is something so wonderful in an urban southern city! The entire time, I honestly did not feel like I was in Richmond, Virginia.

Walking across the bridge and seeing many sections of the James River Park System was so calming. We saw so many birds and ducks! When I saw some people whitewater rafting, I thought to myself, hey, that could be me! The outdoor activities range from hiking, biking, kayaking, whitewater rafting, rock climbing and swimming to name a few!

About two years ago we visited the Hollywood Cemetery, and we were able to see the Chapel of the cemetery from the trail. There are also several historical sites along the hiking trail that we found very interesting.

Charlie really enjoyed herself as well and it always makes me happy to see her happy, when we go on our hiking trails!

Please watch the experience on the video below, so that you can feel as though you are there with us!
