Roanoke Canal Hike: Fall Foliage & Forgotten History!

By, Beth Foster

Hello everyone! Charlie and I hiked the Roanoke Canal Trail in Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina. It is autumn, so we were able to see some beautiful fall foliage. While also embracing the history of the canal! We have done this trail a few times and one thing is for sure and that is we always enjoy it!

What is so amazing to me is that the Roanoke Canal is almost 200 years old! Wow, that is so incredible! Let me give you a little history! In 1882, the canal was purchased and developed into a source of water power, in order to generate electricity. However, in 1912, Dominion Power Company bought the canal and still own it till this day!

The trail follows the canal’s original tow path of 7.2 miles between Roanoke Lake and the town of Weldon. The museum is actually a new addition to the canal.

I have to admit that I was very disappointed when the dam access was closed off! It does not open until 11am and closes at 6pm. Another thing is that pets are not allowed, which was also a disappointment. I am sure they have their reasons for that!

It really made me smile to see all of the butterflies as well as a slow-moving snail, lol. I have not seen a snail since I was a little girl, and boy did that bring joy to our hike!

Stay fit and God bless!
